Nigeria expands solar energy through new training and 100 MW plant tender

Nigeria is advancing its renewable energy sector through new training initiatives and large-scale infrastructure projects. The Federal Government, in partnership with Siemens Energy and GIZ, has opened applications for a free Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Installation Training programme. This initiative, part of the Siemens Energy Education and Development (SEED) project, aims to equip professionals, technicians, and young Nigerians with technical skills through theoretical instruction and hands-on sessions. Successful participants will receive certification from the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

Simultaneously, the Niger State Government has launched an international tender for the Niger State Solar Energy Development Project. The project seeks to install 100 MW of solar PV capacity, divided into two lots: the construction of the power generation facility in Maikunkele and the development of necessary grid interconnection infrastructure. The government has applied for financing from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) to support the project, with a bidding deadline set for October 13, 2026.
