Nigeria ex‑Power Minister Saleh Mamman sentenced to 75 years for money‑laundering

Nigeria's Federal High Court in Abuja convicted former Minister of Power Saleh Mamman of 12 money‑laundering counts on 7 May, relating to the diversion of about N33.8 billion earmarked for the Mambilla and Zungeru hydropower schemes. Twelve days later, on 19 May, the court sentenced the 68‑year‑old former minister to a total of 75 years in prison, with sentences for each count to run consecutively.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) re‑arrested Mamman after a brief flight, and the case has highlighted how corruption has stalled major electricity projects, deepening Nigeria’s long‑standing power crisis despite large public spending.
