World Sight Day 2026 highlights global vision impairment and access gaps
World Sight Day 2026, held under the theme #LoveYourEyes, has prompted global and national initiatives to address vision impairment. The World Health Organization reports that at least 2.2 billion people suffer from vision impairment, with nearly half of these cases being preventable or untreated.
In South Africa, over 11% of the population experiences vision impairment, with 80% of blind individuals residing in under-resourced rural areas. To combat this, Spec-Savers is offering free vision screenings. Similarly, in Bangladesh, the government announced a $130 million investment over five years to expand eye healthcare, aiming to provide 1 million free cataract operations and distribute 10 million spectacles.
In Nigeria, officials noted that 24 million people live with vision loss, prompting calls for domestic resource mobilization to mitigate economic productivity losses. Meanwhile, in Pakistan, the Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital organized awareness walks to promote regular examinations. Global efforts continue to highlight that uncorrected refractive errors and cataracts remain primary drivers of avoidable blindness.
