Nigeria faces economic pressure amid energy reforms and fuel price volatility
Nigeria continues to face significant economic challenges, including high inflation, rising food costs, and unreliable electricity. While the government promotes its ‘Renewed Hope Agenda,’ many citizens remain skeptical due to the persistent gap between official progress reports and daily economic realities.
In the energy sector, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), under the direction of the Federal Ministry of Power, is working to expand electricity access through renewable energy initiatives, such as the Energising Education Programme.
Simultaneously, the government has introduced a 30-day fuel discount scheme to address soaring petrol prices, which have exceeded N1,400 per litre. Under this plan, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) intends to sell petrol at cost for one month, prioritizing public transport operators. However, critics argue the measure is insufficient, noting that the NNPC’s retail network of approximately 1,000 stations is too small to meet the demand of a population of over 200 million compared to the country's 31,000 active petrol stations.
