Nigeria faces electoral concerns and Ebola outbreak
In Nigeria, Representative Abdussamad Dasuki has raised alarms regarding Section 63(2) of the Electoral Act, arguing it could compromise the 2027 general elections. Dasuki warned that the current provision might allow presiding officers to accept ballot papers lacking official security markings, potentially enabling the use of counterfeit ballots. He and the House Whip have submitted a bill to address this loophole and have called for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman to brief the National Assembly on election preparedness.
Separately, the federal government confirmed an Ebola case in Abuja involving a woman who arrived from Uganda. While authorities have identified 44 close contacts for monitoring to prevent transmission, the news has sparked skepticism on social media. Some citizens have expressed concerns that the outbreak could be used as a pretext by the government to restrict movement or influence voter turnout ahead of the 2027 elections.
