Nigeria faces ethnic tensions and political warnings amid violence
Tensions are rising in Nigeria following reports of anti-Igbo incitement on social media and a violent attack on an Igbo family in Oyo State. Facebook posts attributed to certain Yoruba social media users have allegedly called for violence against Igbo people living in Yorubaland, including threats against Igbo-owned businesses and calls to force the group to leave the region.
These digital threats follow the killing of Ifeanyi Chukwu, his wife, and their four children in Oloba Village, Lagelu, Ibadan, on September 22, 2026. The Oyo State Police have arrested three suspects in connection with the incident, where victims were reportedly tied and thrown into a river. While the wife's remains have been recovered, the other family members remain missing.
In response to broader national instability, the Yoruba socio-cultural organization Afenifere has warned against the rise of intolerance and inflammatory statements by politicians, which they claim threaten the 2027 general elections. Afenifere also criticized the federal government's economic policies, calling for a review of the national minimum wage and expressing concern over hyperinflation and the inadequacy of proposed petrol price stabilization mechanisms.
