Nigeria faces political and economic tensions ahead of 2027 elections

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, political tensions and economic concerns are intensifying. The political landscape is characterized by a prominent group of older leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, 74, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 78, who is seeking another presidential attempt. This generational divide is a point of contention in a nation where over 70% of the population is under the age of 30.

In Northern Nigeria, protesters have expressed opposition to President Tinubu, citing insecurity in states such as Zamfara and Sokoto as primary reasons for their stance. Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized internal party management, with National Publicity Secretary Haruna Mohammed arguing that political parties must take responsibility for electoral crises by adhering to their own internal rules and candidate selection processes.

Economic and security risks are also emerging as significant concerns. Analysts warn that potential political violence could deter foreign direct investment and disrupt supply chains, potentially stalling capital inflows. The business community remains wary of how electoral instability might impact operational costs and market stability during the pre-election phase.
