Nigeria faces public health crisis from counterfeit food and medicine

Nigeria is grappling with a significant public health emergency driven by the widespread counterfeiting of food, drinks, and medicines. Recent operations by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have uncovered various fraudulent schemes across the country.

In Lagos, officials discovered a syndicate refilling expensive wine bottles with adulterated mixtures and applying counterfeit labels. In Aba, NAFDAC seized fake packaging materials valued at over N200 million, featuring brands such as Jameson, Glenfiddich, Four Cousins, and Seaman’s Aromatic Schnapps. Additionally, an illegal herbal-product facility with falsified registration numbers was uncovered in Agege, and goods worth N2.6 billion were destroyed in Port Harcourt during a nationwide crackdown.

The issue extends to the adulteration of staples like palm oil and honey, as well as the use of chemicals to manipulate the appearance of fruits like plantains and bananas. Stakeholders have called for stronger regulation and increased protection for consumers to safeguard public health and the integrity of the nation's food system.
