Nigeria faces rising data demand and high overseas cloud hosting costs

Nigeria is experiencing a massive surge in digital activity, with data consumption reaching a record 8.51 million terabytes in the first half of 2026. According to the Nigerian Communications Commission, this growth reflects an accelerating shift toward a digital-first economy. Major telecommunications providers MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria reported that data services have overtaken voice as their primary revenue stream.

MTN Nigeria reported that its 55.7 million active data subscribers consumed an average of 14.8 gigabytes per month, contributing to N1.70 trillion in data revenue. Airtel Nigeria also saw strong performance, recording N691 billion in data revenue.

Parallel to this rising demand, the National Sovereign Cloud Initiative is addressing the financial and security implications of data storage. Ike Nnamani, Chairman of the initiative's Technical Working Group, stated that Nigeria currently spends nearly $1 billion annually on overseas cloud hosting for government data. This figure is projected to rise to almost $4 billion in the coming years. The initiative aims to repatriate these funds and enhance national security by encouraging the development of local cloud infrastructure and data centers within Nigeria.
