Nigeria faces economic hardship following fuel subsidy removal

Nigeria continues to face severe socio-economic challenges following the removal of fuel subsidies by President Bola Tinubu. While the government maintains that economic reforms are necessary, the practical impact on citizens has been marked by a significant cost-of-living crisis.

Reports indicate that petrol prices have increased approximately six times since the subsidy removal, and the cost of basic food items has more than doubled. This has led to widespread hardship for various sectors, including civil servants, small manufacturers, and low-income families, contributing to Nigeria's status as a nation with a high number of multi-dimensionally impoverished people.

Although the previous subsidy system was criticized for being expensive and prone to corruption, the transition has left many Nigerians struggling with increased transportation costs, rising electricity and diesel prices, and diminished purchasing power.
