Nigeria faces severe food insecurity amid high inflation
Nigeria is experiencing a significant food security crisis as food inflation reached 22.95 percent in March, marking its highest pace in 15 years. This surge is driven by price increases in essential items such as cereals, meat, fish, fruits, and vegetables.
While some reports indicate a moderation in certain food prices, research from SBM Intelligence suggests this has not translated into relief for the population. The gap between declining ingredient costs and actual affordability remains wide due to weak purchasing power, stagnant incomes, and the rising costs of other essentials like transportation and housing.
The crisis is compounded by several factors, including high unemployment rates, the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic, and ongoing conflicts between farmers and herders in agricultural regions. These pressures are particularly acute for the large portion of the population living on less than $2 a day.
