Nigeria faces Tanzania in AFCON qualifiers amid defensive struggles
Nigeria enters a pair of Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Tanzania following a streak of five consecutive games without a clean sheet. The defensive slump includes recent friendlies against Poland, Portugal, and Russia, as well as competitive fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
In Group L, Nigeria currently trails Guinea-Bissau by three points. While Nigeria secured a 2-1 victory over Madagascar in their opening qualifier, a 3-0 loss to Guinea-Bissau has placed them in a difficult position. Because Tanzania is a tournament co-host, they have already secured a place in the finals, meaning only the highest-ranked team among Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau, and Madagascar will qualify.
Coach Éric Chelle is currently integrating new talent into the squad. A recent 3-3 friendly draw against Russia saw nine senior international debuts, including players such as Peter Edokpolor, Igor Wilfred, and Abubakar Umar. While the attacking lineup features players like Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Iheanacho, analysts suggest that stabilizing the defense will be critical for the upcoming matches in Uyo and Dar es Salaam.
