Nigeria faces urban housing and infrastructure challenges

Nigeria is experiencing a rapidly changing urban landscape, with residential and commercial developments reshaping cities from Lagos to Abuja. However, experts warn that weak planning institutions, inefficient land administration, and inadequate infrastructure threaten to deepen the national housing crisis.

At the Housing For All Support Initiative’s summit in Lagos, stakeholders discussed the need to integrate housing and sustainable urban development into economic planning. Discussions emphasized that the challenge extends beyond construction volume to whether developments can provide functional cities with reliable infrastructure and affordable housing.

In the private sector, developers like Lekki Gardens have utilized unconventional strategies to overcome infrastructure gaps. By investing in essential access roads and bridges before building homes, the company successfully established a business model that facilitated rapid sales in areas like Ajah and Abuja, where traditional marketing methods had previously struggled.
