Nigeria Federal Government Announces N217bn Health Workforce Funding Plan

The Nigerian Federal Government has outlined two major financing initiatives for the health sector. An estimated N4.55 billion is required over three years to recruit 122,696 health workers and fill vacant Primary Health Care positions across 26 states, where only 98,059 of the 220,755 required posts are currently occupied. Staffing gaps are most severe in the South‑East (73 % vacancy) and North‑West (70.9 % vacancy). The National Emergency Medical Treatment Committee has already disbursed N2.41 billion for emergency services, benefiting more than 130,000 patients, and plans to extend ambulance coverage nationwide.

Separately, the government pledged more than N217 billion within two years to strengthen medical education and training. This includes over N97 billion invested in 2025 and an additional N120.5 billion approved for 2026 to upgrade medical colleges, procure equipment, expand teaching facilities and establish simulation centres. A new National Research and Innovation Development Fund will also support biomedical research, precision medicine and technology development across the country.
