Nigeria fintech and digital payment landscape undergoes rapid transformation

Nigeria’s financial landscape is undergoing a significant transformation driven by fintech innovation and shifting investment behaviors. Electronic payment transactions in Nigeria reached approximately ₦1.07 quadrillion in 2024, a substantial increase from ₦600 trillion in 2023, according to NIBSS. Companies such as Flutterwave, Paystack, and Moniepoint are evolving from simple service providers into essential financial infrastructure for both domestic and international commerce.

The retail investment sector is also seeing a shift toward digital-first models. However, research from Check suggests a gap between interest and action, noting that many potential investors struggle with discipline and long-term planning before committing funds.

Cross-border financial flows remain a critical component of the economy. Personal remittances reached $20.93 billion in 2024, while inflows through International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs) rose 43.5% to $4.73 billion. As the Central Bank of Nigeria continues to tighten oversight of foreign exchange and IMTO operations, freelancers and businesses are increasingly navigating a complex market of multi-currency platforms, traditional bank domiciliary accounts, and merchant processors to manage international payments.
