Nigeria First Lady Oluremi Tinubu donates N2 billion to revive Akwete weaving

Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady, visited the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Village in Abia State and announced a ₦2 billion donation to support the historic Akwete hand‑woven textile industry. The funding is intended to revive production, create jobs for local artisans, and preserve the centuries‑old craft that uses cotton, raffia and silk on vertical looms.

During the visit she pledged that, if President Bola Tinubu wins a second term, she will wear a traditional buba and wrapper made from Akwete fabric at the inauguration. Tinubu highlighted the cultural importance of the fabric, praised the women weavers, and urged broader Nigerian support for locally made textiles to sustain the heritage and boost the regional economy.
