Nigeria First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s Akara Initiative Sparks Controversy and Academic Debate
The Presidency’s Media Centre posted an AI‑generated image of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, frying and selling akara, intensifying criticism of her earlier remarks that small‑scale food businesses such as akara, roasted corn and kulikuli require little start‑up capital and can be supported with government grants. Critics accused the remarks of trivialising widespread economic hardship, while supporters pointed to the Renewed Hope Initiative’s broader empowerment programmes.
The controversy entered academia when Prince Abubakar Audu University in Kogi State included a question about the First Lady’s advocacy in a Mass Communication exam, asking students to create an advertising copy titled “Beyond Akara and Kulikuli Empowerment.” The exam task reflects how the debate has permeated both public discourse and educational curricula.
