Nigeria Floods Disrupt Lagos-Ore Highway, Displace Residents

Heavy rainfall caused severe flooding along the Lagos‑Ore Highway, a key transport corridor linking Lagos with south‑west and south‑south states. Large sections of the road were submerged, forcing motorists to stop, drive slowly through waist‑deep water or abandon their vehicles. The blockage created long traffic jams and some commuters were forced to move on foot.

In Ondo State, the floodwaters inundated towns such as Odigbo, Irele, Ode‑Aye and Igbokoda, damaging homes, businesses and vehicles, including those of university staff. No casualties were reported, but families were displaced and livelihoods disrupted. Authorities blamed blocked drainage channels and rapid urban development, urging caution and urging the government to accelerate drainage upgrades. Ondo State Commissioner for Environment Tob Loko confirmed that flood‑prone areas have been mapped and promised urgent intervention.
