FIFA President Gianni Infantino faces crisis over failed commercial plan FAST-MOVING
FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing a major institutional crisis following the collapse of the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project. The plan, which aimed to sell a 21 percent stake in a new commercial entity valued at approximately US$ 20 billion to private investors, was abandoned after intense backlash from major regional governing bodies.
In a joint open letter, UEFA, CONCACAF, and the AFC accused Infantino of a “profound failure of judgment” and a “fundamental breach of trust,” stating that leadership in football is a duty of service rather than a personal possession. The three confederations have demanded an investigation conducted by a completely independent third party, rejecting FIFA’s proposal for an internal review.
The crisis has deepened political divisions within the football world. While UEFA has threatened to boycott future FIFA competitions, other organizations have taken different stances. US Soccer and Canada Soccer have joined the criticism, whereas the Mexican Football Federation and the Argentine Football Association have expressed support for Infantino. Additionally, the African Football Confederation (CAF) has reaffirmed its unanimous support for his leadership.
Amidst the governance dispute, Infantino’s personal compensation has come under scrutiny, with reports indicating his annual pay has risen to over US$ 5 million. The political fallout is expected to shape the upcoming FIFA presidential election scheduled for March 2027 in Morocco.
