Nigeria Football Federation electoral congress cancelled

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has reportedly cancelled the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) electoral congress, which was scheduled for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State. This move is part of a plan to reorganize the administration of Nigerian football through a proposed three-month normalization committee intended to oversee federation affairs and prepare for fresh elections.

The decision follows the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after being eliminated by South Africa. Reports indicate the NSC sought assurances from FIFA officials, including President Gianni Infantino, regarding the intervention. While former NFF President Amaju Pinnick was initially considered to lead the committee, the plan reportedly faced opposition from officials in the Presidency, leading the NSC to search for an alternative chairman.

In response to reports of a potential takeover, Nigerian football stakeholders have expressed mixed reactions. Some industry leaders have urged authorities not to reintroduce former administrators linked to the sport’s current challenges, calling for fresh leadership instead. While speculation regarding the removal of current NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau persists, FIFA has not yet confirmed plans for a normalization committee.
