Nigeria football figures discuss NFF elections and AFCON format
Former Super Eagles striker Benedict Akwuegbu has announced his candidacy for the presidency of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Following the resignation of President Ibrahim Gusau and the Executive Committee, Akwuegbu aims to implement a five-point agenda focused on youth development, transparency, and the welfare of former internationals.
A central component of his platform is the establishment of a distinct Nigerian football philosophy to unify the playing style of national teams from the U-17 level to the Super Eagles. Akwuegbu cited Nigeria’s failure to qualify for two consecutive World Cups as a primary motivation for his run, advocating for a return to merit-based, professional structures.
Separately, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed support for returning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to a biennial cycle. Chelle argues that a two-year tournament format would facilitate better player development and provide African nations with more frequent competitive experience compared to a four-year cycle. He also noted the potential economic benefits for host countries through increased tourism and commercial opportunities.
