Nigeria formalizes fiscal and monetary policy coordination

The Federal Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to coordinate fiscal and monetary policies. This agreement establishes a structured framework for information-sharing and aligned macroeconomic assumptions, moving beyond personal relationships between leadership to institutionalize cooperation.

The initiative aims to prevent fiscal and monetary actions from working at cross-purposes. For instance, it seeks to ensure that government borrowing and expenditure do not undermine monetary efforts to control inflation, liquidity, and interest rates. By aligning these policies, the framework intends to provide greater stability for businesses and investors who require consistent policy directions for planning.

While the International Monetary Fund has noted that recent reforms—including exchange-rate liberalization and the removal of fuel subsidies—have strengthened macroeconomic stability, it also highlighted that inflationary pressures remain a concern for many Nigerians. The new framework is designed to address these challenges through improved institutional coordination.
