Nigeria fuel subsidy removal sparks economic and political debate

The removal of fuel subsidies in Nigeria has sparked significant economic and social debate. Hakeem Baba Ahmed, National Chairman of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), stated that President Bola Tinubu inherited a 2023 federal budget prepared under former President Muhammadu Buhari that contained no financial provisions for fuel subsidy payments.

Ahmed suggested that while the decision to announce the removal during his inauguration was courageous, the administration could have mitigated political fallout by explaining the lack of budgetary allocation to the National Assembly rather than assuming the direct responsibility for the policy.

Critics argue that the subsidy removal has led to severe economic consequences, including skyrocketing prices for goods and transportation, increased hunger, and rising poverty levels across the nation. The policy remains a central point of contention in the country's political landscape.
