Nigeria government bond yields rise amid global decline

Nigerian government bond yields increased during the week ending October 16, 2026, diverging from a global trend of declining borrowing costs. The benchmark 10-year bond yield rose by 46 basis points, moving from 16.59% to 17.05%, according to the Financial Markets Dealers Association (FMDA).

This upward movement occurred even as benchmark yields declined in the United States, South Africa, Kenya, Japan, the United Kingdom, and China. The rise in Nigerian yields reflects domestic monetary conditions and investor demand for higher returns, occurring while the Central Bank of Nigeria maintains a restrictive monetary policy rate of 23% to combat inflation.

At a Federal Government bond auction on October 19, the Debt Management Office (DMO) accepted higher stop rates while increasing borrowing through competitive and non-competitive allotments. The 10-year yield in Nigeria remains approximately 1,197 basis points above the US benchmark.
