Nigeria Government Reaffirms No Electricity Tariff Increase

The Federal Government of Nigeria announced that there is no plan to raise electricity tariffs for any grid‑connected consumer across all service bands. The clarification was issued by Special Adviser to the President on Power Infrastructure, Sadiq Wanka, who said media reports had misrepresented comments he made at the Asharami Square 3.0 event in Lagos on 22 July 2026.

Wanka reiterated that the administration remains committed to protecting vulnerable households through continued tariff subsidies. He referenced the National Integrated Electricity Policy, finalized in December 2024 and approved by the Federal Executive Council in May 2025, which outlines a gradual shift to cost‑reflective tariffs already applied to “Band A” customers. For all other consumer bands, the government affirmed that subsidies will stay in place and that it is exploring more efficient delivery mechanisms, notably the Power Consumer Assistance Fund (PCAF) created under the Electricity Act 2023.

The statement also highlighted the government's support for media initiatives such as Asharami Square to improve public understanding of complex policy issues.
