Nigeria Governors Forum backs creation of state police with constitutional safeguards
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) endorsed the establishment of a state police force, emphasizing that any new policing structure must be rooted in clear constitutional provisions and protect citizens' fundamental rights. At a meeting in Abuja attended by governors from all 36 states, the forum reviewed progress on the initiative, received presentations from the NGF Secretariat and a delegation of state Attorneys‑General, and pledged to consult further on the required constitutional amendments.
While security was the dominant topic, the forum also discussed related national issues such as electricity reforms, nutrition programmes, and the National Solar Super‑Grid project. The governors reiterated that a constitutionally sound state police could help address persistent insecurity across Nigeria.
