Nigeria grapples with hunger-driven insecurity and social‑media disinformation

The United Nations World Food Programme warned that more than 17 million people across nine conflict‑affected states in northern Nigeria are facing crisis, emergency or catastrophic levels of hunger, the worst in a decade. False videos and AI‑generated images circulated after the May 15 2026 school kidnappings in Oyo State and after a June 1 2025 rumor of bandit incursions in Lagos, stoking panic and mistrust. Analysts say the digital misinformation pandemic compounds the physical threats by inflaming fear and hindering coordinated responses.
