Nigeria health stakeholders call for sustainable HIV and TB financing

Health stakeholders in Nigeria are calling for a transition from fragmented, donor-dependent funding to sustainable domestic financing mechanisms for critical services, including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and family planning.

At a multi-stakeholder dialogue in Abuja organized by the Technology for Inspiration Initiative and Africa REACH, participants advocated for improved budgetary provisions and increased youth involvement in health policy. Recommendations included establishing a Youth Trust Fund and utilizing Public–Private Partnerships to mobilize domestic resources. Stakeholders emphasized the need for a unified, transparent financing mechanism to ensure the continuity of youth-focused interventions beyond 2030.

Additionally, the Society for Family Health (SFH) has urged the integration of essential health services into the National Health Insurance Authority’s benefit package. SFH representatives noted that moving away from vertical, project-based programs toward a system anchored in strategic purchasing and domestic health insurance would protect existing health gains and reduce vulnerability to unpredictable external funding.
