Nigeria healthcare officials highlight patient safety and infrastructure upgrades

In commemoration of World Patient Safety Day, healthcare officials in Nigeria have highlighted ongoing efforts to improve medical safety and infrastructure.

At the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Chief Medical Director Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo emphasized that patient safety is central to quality care. To support this, LUTH has installed approximately 600 kilowatts of solar and inverter systems to stabilize power supply. The hospital is also improving accessibility through the construction of ramps, additional elevators, and a skywalk connecting the old hospital to a new 256-consulting-room facility.

In Kogi State, Ayo Olayemi of the Kogi Hospitals Management Board reported that Governor Ahmed Ododo has renovated three Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in each of the state’s 21 Local Government Areas, totaling 63 facilities. Additionally, seven new PHCs have been constructed in high-population areas. While Olayemi noted that human resource shortages remain a challenge, the renovations aim to improve timely diagnosis and treatment. He also urged patients to exercise their right to ask questions regarding their diagnoses and treatments to prevent medical errors.
