Nigeria hires 37,000 health workers since 2023

The Nigerian federal government announced that it has recruited 37,000 health workers across the country since 2023 and trained 70,000 frontline staff to improve service delivery. A new National Policy on Health Workforce Migration was approved to strengthen retention and promote ethical recruitment. Under the revised Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF 2.0), N32.9 billion was allocated to support at least 8,300 primary health centres, with plans to expand the network to 13,000 facilities nationwide. Government reforms have facilitated roughly 80 million patient visits and provided health insurance to over 21 million vulnerable Nigerians. Disease surveillance and outbreak preparedness are being bolstered through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, while a presidential initiative seeks to expand local pharmaceutical manufacturing. By the 2025 Joint Annual Review, 84 % of the key performance indicators of the Presidential Health Sector Renewal Compact were achieved, though officials acknowledge ongoing challenges.
