Nigeria honors media pioneer Raymond Dokpesi

Media practitioners and political leaders are calling for various tributes to honor the late Raymond Dokpesi, a pioneer of private broadcasting in Nigeria. During the 2026 Raymond Dokpesi Endurance Trek in Lagos, advocates urged the Federal Government to officially declare October 25 as Nigeria’s Private Broadcasting Day to recognize his role in establishing Raypower 100.5 FM and Africa Independent Television (AIT).

In Abuja, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma proposed the establishment of a national media centre in Dokpesi’s honor. The proposed facility is intended to serve as a research hub focused on development journalism, exploring how media can strengthen democratic institutions and contribute to Nigeria’s socio-economic progress.
