Nigeria hospitality sector calls for digital transformation and regulatory clarity

The Hospitality and Tourism Management Association of Nigeria (HATMAN) has urged the Nigerian government, industry operators, and academia to develop practical strategies for digital transformation. During the association's 20th International Conference in Awka, National President Dr. Lilian C. Managwu emphasized that technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and data analytics are reshaping global hospitality operations. She noted that while these tools offer opportunities to improve service delivery and global competitiveness, the industry must avoid replacing human workers with technology to prevent counterproductive outcomes.

Separately, the Nigerian hospitality industry continues to navigate regulatory complexities regarding licensing and registration. A recent federal high court ruling has provided some relief to hoteliers following a long-standing dispute between state and federal authorities. The conflict stems from overlapping jurisdictions between state governments, such as Lagos, and federal bodies like the National Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) and the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR).
