Nigeria hosts Commonwealth Games athletics trials in Lagos

Athletes from across Nigeria converged on Lagos for the Commonwealth Games Trials at the Yaba College of Technology (YabaTech) Sports Complex from June 20 to June 22, 2024. The three‑day competition features 32 events, with 14 marquee races spotlighted, including the men’s and women’s 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, and the women’s 100 m hurdles where world‑record holder Oluwatobiloba Amusan seeks to defend her dominance.

Top performers such as NCAA sprint star Kanyinsola Ajayi, 400 m talent Samuel Ogazi, and a strong field of veteran and emerging sprinters are expected to compete for places on Team Nigeria for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Officials from the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, led by President Chief Tonobok Okowa, oversaw preparations, while the National Institute for Sports provided transit accommodation for early arrivals. The trials will determine the national team and are seen as a critical step toward international competition.
