Nigeria House of Representatives holds hearing on Nutritionists Registration Council Bill

Nutritionists Registration Council Bill Institute for Dietetics in Nigeria National Assembly HB 2659 dietetic regulation

The Nigerian House of Representatives has held a public hearing regarding a bill to establish the Nutritionists Registration Council of Nigeria. The proposed legislation aims to regulate nutrition practice, strengthen professional standards, and protect citizens from misleading nutritional advice. Speaker Abbas Tajudeen noted that the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security highlights the importance of nutrition to national development and public health.

However, the Institute for Dietetics in Nigeria (IDN) has staged protests at the National Assembly to oppose the bill, identified as HB 2659. The IDN argues that the proposed council would create overlapping regulatory authorities with the Dietitians Council of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, HB 515, which was introduced in 2022.

IDN National President Tajudeen Ahmed warned that the bill could compromise patient safety by potentially granting clinical authority to individuals without the necessary specialized education and supervised training. The institute is calling on lawmakers to reject HB 2659 in its current form and instead focus on finalizing the legislative process for the Dietitians Council.
