Nigeria House of Representatives summons telecom CEOs
The Nigerian House of Representatives has directed chief executives of telecommunications companies to appear before an ad hoc committee on November 4, 2026. The summons follows persistent consumer complaints regarding poor network services, including slow internet connectivity, dropped calls, failed transactions, and inadequate coverage. Operators recorded over 413,000 consumer complaints during the first half of 2026.
Lawmakers rejected an attempt by the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) to have its chairman, Gbenga Adebayo, represent the companies. Representative Sunday Umeha argued that because each operator holds an individual license from the federal government, they must personally account for their operations rather than delegating to an industry association.
The committee, chaired by Olumide Osoba, has threatened to issue arrest warrants for executives from companies including MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, and Mafab Communications if they fail to honor the deadline.
