Nigeria and Germany deepen bilateral ties with trade boost and energy cooperation

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu‑Ojukwu, met German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul in Abuja, reaffirming the two countries’ commitment to a strategic partnership. Both officials highlighted a 10 % increase in bilateral trade over the past year and pledged to expand German investment in Nigeria’s priority sectors, including renewable energy, digital innovation, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare and infrastructure.

In addition to trade and investment, Germany announced a programme to address Nigeria’s annual $1.5 billion loss from gas flaring. The initiative, presented by German Ambassador Annett Günther at the Nigeria Oil and Gas Conference, will explore converting flared gas into domestic energy, industrial feedstock and hydrogen, supporting Nigeria’s net‑zero target for 2060. Both sides emphasised that deeper cooperation will also advance regional security, climate action and sustainable development.
