Nigeria inaugurates task team to coordinate disarmament and reintegration efforts
The Nigerian Federal Government has inaugurated the National Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) Task Team. The initiative aims to establish a coordinated, nationally owned approach to addressing terrorism, banditry, and other forms of armed violence.
Major General Adamu Laka, the National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), inaugurated the team on behalf of National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu. The task team is designed to harmonize existing efforts, such as Operation SAFE CORRIDOR, the Borno Model, and the Presidential Amnesty Programme, by creating common national standards and clearly defined responsibilities.
The team will work to strengthen cooperation between the NCTC, the Federal Ministry of Justice, and various state committees, while engaging UN agencies, diplomatic missions, and development partners. The goal is to resolve overlapping mandates, assess institutional readiness, and develop an implementable national roadmap for sustainable peace and security.
