Nigeria increases annual robe allowance for state counsel to N1m

The Nigerian Federal Government has approved a significant increase in the annual robe allowance for state counsel and legal officers. According to a circular from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, the allowance for lawyers within the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria will rise from N300,000 to N1,000,000 per annum.

Additionally, the commission approved an annual allowance of N600,000 for lawyers serving as legal officers in other ministries, departments, and agencies who perform strictly legal functions. These revised rates are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027, and will be funded through the overhead allocations of the respective ministries, departments, and agencies.
