Nigeria INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan pledges credible 2027 elections
INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan met with Director‑General of the National Orientation Agency, Mallam Lanre Issa‑Onilu, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. Amupitan stressed that advanced technologies such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal are essential but insufficient without an informed electorate. He called for a stronger partnership with the NOA to run nationwide voter‑education campaigns, combat misinformation, and discourage vote‑buying ahead of the 2027 general election.
The Foundation for Credible Elections and Good Governance Initiative welcomed Amupitan’s declaration that ballot‑box snatching and result manipulation are now over. The group praised his legal expertise and institutional independence, urging political parties, civil‑society groups and the media to support the commission’s effort to deliver free and fair polls in 2027.
