Nigeria INEC extends voter registration, targets IDPs and disabled
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which began on 18 August 2025, will be extended by two weeks to 24 July 2026. The extension follows feedback from state offices, political parties and civil‑society groups. INEC also introduced a self‑service online registration option available from 8 July 2026, allowing eligible voters to complete biometric capture on personal devices.
In parallel, the non‑governmental organisation TAF Africa, supported by the EU‑SDGN project, partnered with INEC to mobilise internally displaced persons (IDPs) and persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Abuja’s Wasa IDP camp. The two‑day intervention aimed to register over 4,000 eligible voters among the camp’s 7,776 residents and provided specialised assistance such as braille ballot guides and magnifying glasses. TAF Africa staff highlighted the need to ensure that vulnerable groups are not left out of the 2027 general elections.
