Nigeria: INEC releases final 2027 election candidate list

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final list of candidates for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, covering both presidential and National Assembly contests. For the presidency, 18 candidates have been cleared, including Bola Tinubu (APC), Atiku Abubakar (ADC), and Peter Obi (NDC).

In the legislative race, 1,303 candidates are competing for the 109 senatorial seats across the country, representing 21 political parties. The list features several high-profile figures seeking to maintain or gain influence, such as Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and former Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

A significant shift in the Senate is expected, as the list confirms that 52 of the 109 current senators will not be returning to the 11th National Assembly. While 57 incumbents have been validated to seek another term, the remaining 52 are exiting due to factors such as losing party primaries, pursuing governorship seats, or stepping aside for other party interests.

To support the upcoming electoral cycle, INEC has also initiated training programs for electoral personnel in several states, including Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory, aimed at improving professionalism and voter confidence.
