Nigeria infrastructure: Road decay sparks criticism in Edo State and federal disputes
Infrastructure concerns are mounting in Nigeria as residents and federal officials address the deteriorating state of major roadways. In Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo is facing public criticism over the condition of Upper Siluko Road in Benin City. Motorists have described the road as a “death trap” due to large potholes that cause vehicle damage and impassable conditions. Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa attributed reconstruction delays to heavy rainfall.
Separately, the Federal Ministry of Works has responded to allegations regarding the neglect of the Benin–Onitsha road. The ministry stated that the corridor's poor condition predates the current administration of President Bola Tinubu. Officials explained that immediate federal intervention on the Benin–Asaba section is limited by a 25-year concession agreement under the Highway Development and Management Initiative (HDMI), which involves private-sector management of the 125-kilometre stretch.
