Nigeria infrastructure: Umahi defends coastal highway and South-East projects
Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, stated that President Bola Tinubu aims to unify the South-East region and address historical grievances through increased infrastructural development. Umahi noted that his position as a minister from the region has facilitated the allocation of various projects to the area.
Addressing criticisms regarding the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Umahi challenged detractors to a public debate, asserting that construction has already progressed beyond Epe, Lagos State. He argued that the project is essential for unlocking Nigeria’s economic potential and benefiting the Niger Delta.
However, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is currently facing threats from vandalism. Officials reported that individuals have been caught removing construction materials from project sites. This activity follows the recent inauguration of the Coastal Highway Guards, a security measure intended to protect critical infrastructure. Authorities warned that such vandalism could increase construction costs, cause delays, and create safety risks for the public.
