Nigeria Integrates National Digital Postcode System Across Federal Agencies

The Nigerian government has begun rolling out a new National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System to all Federal Ministries, Departments, Agencies and sub‑national governments. The initiative, presented at a workshop in Abuja, aims to replace fragmented location tracking with a unified, machine‑readable address code for every addressable location in the country.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Dr Bosun Tijani, speaking through Permanent Secretary Engineer Nadungu Gagare, called the system a "strategic national asset" that will strengthen public administration, improve service delivery, enhance security, promote financial inclusion, support logistics and e‑commerce, and provide geospatial intelligence for evidence‑based policymaking. He said, "Every successful digital economy depends on trusted national infrastructure. Without accurate location intelligence, governments struggle to plan effectively, emergency responders lose valuable time, businesses incur unnecessary costs, and citizens are often excluded from essential public services."

The Head of the Civil Service, Mrs Esther Didi‑Wilson Jack, voiced full backing, emphasizing the role of the postcode in modernising public administration. NIPOST CEO Omotola Odeyemi highlighted the agency’s shift from a traditional courier to an infrastructure provider, noting, "Just as digital identity helps to establish who a citizen is, and digital payments help us to move value seamlessly, this National Digital Postcode helps us to determine where services, opportunities, and interventions should be delivered."
