Nigeria intensifies accountability for government agencies
The Nigerian Federal Government has launched a new framework to enforce accountability and improve efficiency across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). This initiative aims to eliminate overlapping regulations, redundant fees, and bureaucratic bottlenecks that hinder business operations.
Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele announced a ‘One Government’ approach, which encourages agencies to coordinate activities to ensure businesses face only one lead agency, one process, and one fee when mandates overlap. This strategy is intended to reduce compliance costs and facilitate investment.
Princess Zahrah Audu, Director-General of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), reported that while 16 MDAs have fully implemented assessed reforms, ‘mystery shopping’ exercises revealed a decline in responsiveness once active monitoring concluded. To combat this, the government will utilize continuous tools such as live performance trackers, digital monitoring, and the forthcoming Business Facilitation Act (BFA) Compliance Ranking to ensure sustained institutional performance.
