Nigeria intensifies rabies response as cases confirmed in Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) confirmed rabies cases in the Gwagwalada and Kwali area councils, prompting the administration to urge residents to report suspected cases and seek immediate medical attention after animal exposure. The World Health Organization classifies rabies a neglected tropical disease that is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but preventable through dog vaccination and timely post‑exposure prophylaxis; it estimates about 59,000 human deaths annually, with Africa bearing a large share.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has identified rabies as a priority zoonotic disease, calling for stronger coordination between veterinary and public‑health authorities. In Rivers State, the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, led by Dr Gloria Daminabo, pledged technical support to the state government, offering awareness campaigns, vaccination drives and professional assistance to curb further spread.
