Nigeria introduces net billing for large-scale solar users
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced new Net Billing Regulations 2026, allowing owners of large solar power installations to earn electricity bill credits. Under this scheme, consumers can export surplus electricity generated by their solar systems to electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in exchange for credits applied to their bills.
The initiative is specifically targeted at larger installations rather than small residential setups. To be eligible, solar systems must have a minimum capacity of 50 kilowatt-peak (kWp) and a maximum capacity of 1.5 megawatt-peak (MWp).
Participants must be connected to a DisCo network, meet technical and safety standards, obtain distribution company approval, sign a Net Billing Agreement, and complete registration with NERC. The regulations are expected to primarily benefit businesses, commercial establishments, and industries with significant solar capacity.
