Nigeria investigates legitimacy of alleged fake government agencies

An investigation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is underway regarding the legitimacy of certain entities operating as government agencies in Nigeria. Concerns have been raised over the authenticity and legal status of bodies such as the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFPC) and the National Brands Development and Made-in-Nigeria Special Project Office.

Legal analyst Opatola Victor has called for the probe to look beyond the individuals currently accused and identify government enablers who may have facilitated these entities' access to official facilities, such as the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Victor noted that while the President has the power to establish administrative bodies, their mandates must be clearly defined through constitutional provisions or valid Gazettes.

The emergence of these disputed organizations has been described as a governance emergency, highlighting risks of public resource diversion and a lack of transparency. Critics argue that the proliferation of such structures threatens fiscal discipline and public-sector efficiency, necessitating a comprehensive audit and a public register of all legitimate government agencies.
