Nigeria invests ₦1bn to modernize technical and vocational education

The Nigerian Federal Government has launched initiatives to modernize technical and vocational education and training (TVET) to improve employability and economic productivity. Through a ₦1 billion intervention from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, the government has produced 27 new National Occupational Standards and updated four existing ones, totaling 31 reviewed standards. These reforms aim to align technical education with industry requirements and technological advancements.

In a parallel effort, the government has begun restructuring the Monotechnic and Technical Education Board (MBTE) to enhance its oversight of polytechnics, monotechnics, and other technical institutions. The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced that a team is working with KPMG to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the agency. This assessment is intended to develop a functional organizational structure and operational framework to ensure the MBTE can effectively drive the national TVET ecosystem.
