Nigeria kidnapping survivors face ongoing psychological trauma

Recent kidnappings in Nigeria have highlighted the long-term psychological impact on survivors. In October, twenty prospective National Youth Service Corps members were abducted along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Imo State. Although they were rescued after seven days, the incident underscores the need for structured mental health support for those navigating insecurity and grief.

In a related cultural context, the play ‘Girls’ at London’s Young Vic explores the experiences of women abducted by the insurgent group Boko Haram. The production depicts the lives of those held in captivity, focusing on the trauma and the search for agency amidst extreme circumstances. The play references the 2014 Chibok school abductions, noting that many victims remain missing.
